Valley of Cuelgamuros Tickets
Description
With this entry to the Valley of Cuelgamuros, you will have the opportunity to delve into one of the significant structures reflecting the Franco era in 20th century Spain.
Reasons to Explore the Valley of Cuelgamuros
Following the Spanish Civil War, dictator Francisco Franco initiated the construction of a memorial at the southern tip of the Sierra de Guadarrama: the Valley of the Fallen.
A recent law enacted in 2022 has renamed this site, situated in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, as the Valley of Cuelgamuros. This legislative change aims to transform the monument into a site of recognition, honor, and remembrance for all the victims of Franco's regime interred here.
Your ticket grants you the freedom to explore this area at your leisure, now regarded as a site of reflection and reconciliation. The impressive 150-meter-high (492-ft) cross and the grand sculptures depicting the evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, crafted by Juan de Ávalos, are especially remarkable.
The basilica of the Valley of Cuelgamuros serves as the focal point of the entire site. Notable features include the chapels dedicated to the Virgin of Africa, La Merced, and El Pilar, in addition to the choir, the main nave, the transept, and a dome adorned with a skylight created by artist Santiago Padrós.
From the esplanade surrounding the basilica and its associated structures, visitors can appreciate stunning panoramas of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range, which lies between the Community of Madrid and the province of Segovia.
