Tour Details
At the agreed time, we will convene at Schloßplatz to kick off our walking tour of Dresden. Are you ready to uncover the stories of this captivating city?
Our adventure begins at Theaterplatz, renowned as one of Europe’s most striking squares. Surrounded by architectural marvels like the Semper Opera House, the Royal Palace, the Cathedral, and the Old Masters Gallery, this historic space has long been a focal point for the cultural and political life of Dresden.
Next, we’ll proceed to the majestic Zwinger. Initially envisioned as a grand entryway to an uncompleted royal residence, the Zwinger stands as a breathtaking piece of Baroque architecture. Its lavish pavilions and expansive courtyards showcase the opulence of the Saxon court from three centuries ago.
As we move on, we will pass by Dresden Castle, the home of the Saxon monarchy. Having survived fires, conflicts, and numerous renovations, this palace presents a unique mix of styles and narratives. We will venture through one of its courtyards, where its distinguished façade becomes apparent.
Our path will lead us to the Fürstenzug, known as the Procession of Princes. Stretching an impressive 100 meters (328 feet) and composed of roughly 24,000 porcelain tiles, it ranks as the largest porcelain mural globally. This homage to Saxony's sovereigns features many intricate details—take a moment to spot some of the hidden symbols and tales!
Continuing, we will arrive at Neumarkt, the nucleus of Dresden's post-war restoration. Here, we will also view the Frauenkirche, a poignant emblem of the city's endurance. Reduced to rubble during World War II and meticulously rebuilt using many original stones, the church's reconstruction symbolizes healing and transformation.
Finally, we will visit the Dresden Cathedral, once a court church. Constructed discreetly by a Catholic monarch amidst a mainly Protestant area, this remarkable edifice is rich with intriguing characteristics and serves as the final resting place for several royals. As we observe it from the exterior, our guide will share insights into its remarkable history.
After a comprehensive 2-hour exploration, we will return to our original meeting point to conclude the tour.
