Mapimí & Ojuela Day Trip
Description
Embark on a journey to the past and uncover the significant historical landmarks of Durango with our immersive day trip to Mapimí and Ojuela. This excursion allows you to discover the ancient territories once inhabited by the Tobosos and Cocoyomes Indigenous peoples.
Mapimí & Ojuela Day Trip
Your adventure begins with a convenient pickup at your hotel in Durango, from where we'll travel to Mapimí, recognized as one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos (Magic Towns). Once we arrive, you’ll have an hour of leisure to enjoy a breakfast of your choice.
Next, we will visit the Benito Juárez Museum, formerly the residence of the revered "Benemérito de las Américas" during the itinerant Republic. Within its walls, you will find his personal room, along with various documents, artifacts, and artworks that commemorate this influential indigenous leader.
As we leave, the route will take us by the dwelling of the legendary revolutionary priest, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Our view will also include the stunning Church of Santiago Apóstol, a marvelous edifice showcasing Baroque and Mudejar architectural features that trace back to the 18th century.
Following this, we will hop back on the bus for a brief ride to the deserted village of Ojuela. Here, you will traverse the remarkable suspension bridge, historically utilized for hauling minerals from the Santa Rita mine. This mine, which encountered flooding in the mid-20th century, was initially unearthed by Spanish conquistadors in 1598. A guided tour will provide engaging insights into the rich history of this intriguing area.
Concluding our visit, you will have an hour of free time to enjoy lunch before we head back to Durango. We anticipate returning to your hotel approximately 12 hours after our departure.
