Sierra de Órganos & Nombre de Dios Day Trip
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel in Durango as we set our sights on the Sierra de Órganos National Park. Upon reaching this awe-inspiring location within the Sierra Madre Occidental, prepare to be captivated by its unique volcanic rock formations. Take the time to explore and discover any shapes or figures that may be hidden within these remarkable monoliths!
As we venture onward, you will traverse through lush oak and cedar forests, dotted with prickly pear and cacti, where wild animals such as hares, badgers, and white-tailed deer find sanctuary. Following this natural spectacle, we will proceed to our next exciting stop.
Our itinerary includes a visit to the Pueblo Mágico (Magic Town) of Nombre de Dios, named for being the site of the first Franciscan mass in honor of God. Here, we will explore the historic ex-convent of San Francisco, which dates back to the 16th century, showcasing a beautifully ornate façade with Ionic columns and decorative palm motifs in the mortar. Afterwards, we will sample local mezcal at El Malpaís mezcalería, complemented by fresh bread and cheese.
You'll also get a glimpse of the Silver Route, known as the Royal Road of Interior Land. This historic trade pathway extends for nearly 1,600 miles (2,560 kilometers) and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. Nearby, we will witness the stunning natural site of El Cuevón, where you may spot majestic golden eagles. This area, along with the Sierra de Órganos, served as a backdrop for the movie Caveman, featuring Ringo Starr.
Your day will conclude as we return you to your hotel in Durango, marking a fulfilling six-hour excursion.
