Ahu Akivi Trip
Description
The iconic moai statues are synonymous with Easter Island. This journey to Ahu Akivi will take you through significant archaeological sites, allowing you to understand their importance within the Rapanui culture.
Ahu Akivi Excursion
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your accommodation on the island at the specified time, followed by a trip to Ahu Akivi, noted as one of the few moai locations situated inland, away from the coast.
Here, you'll have the opportunity to view the seven moai of this revered site, aligned to perfectly face the sunset during the March equinox. Remarkably, the moai of Ahu Akivi stand as the sole Rapanui monuments that are so specifically oriented toward an astronomical event.
As we navigate this sacred site, you will learn about the meaning of Ahu Akivi. According to legend, the seven moai symbolize the seven navigators who discovered the island after an arduous journey from another territory within what is now known as Polynesia.
Our exploration will continue towards Panu Pau, a quarry located in a small volcanic crater, where the Rapanui extracted a unique red sandstone. This material was utilized in crafting the ‘pukao’ stone headdresses, which are still evident atop some of the moai today. The ‘pukao’ represented a traditional hair arrangement commonly worn by the Rapanui.
The itinerary concludes at the Tahai Ceremonial Complex, where you will examine the archaeological remains that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Following our exploration, we will return you to your hotel, three hours after the initial pickup.
