Rano Kau, Orongo, Vinapu, & Ahu Akivi Day Trip
Description
Immerse yourself in a captivating day trip that blends volcanic rock formations, stunning coastal vistas, and time-honored traditions. The adventure takes you to Rano Kau, Orongo, Vinapu, and Ahu Akivi, revealing the rich history and spirituality of the culture of Easter Island.
Itinerary Overview
At the agreed time, we will collect you from your accommodation in Hanga Roa to embark on an exploration of Rapa Nui National Park. Prepare to discover some of the most remarkable and mystical scenery in this isolated region of the Pacific, ensuring an unforgettable experience!
Our journey begins at Vinapu, where we will spend 30 to 45 minutes exploring this archaeological site renowned for its meticulously constructed stone walls, strikingly akin to Incan architecture. This resemblance has sparked theories regarding possible pre-Columbian interactions between cultures. You will also encounter toppled moai and ceremonial sites that narrate the grandeur of ancient Rapa Nui.
From there, we proceed to the majestic Rano Kau Volcano, which harbors an inner lagoon surrounded by indigenous flora within its dormant crater. The vistas from this vantage point are among the most stunning on Easter Island, leaving you in awe of the natural beauty.
Close by lies Orongo, a sacred village associated with the Tangata manu (“bird-man”) ritual. This part of the tour includes a 1-hour and 45-minute hike through petroglyphs, remnants of traditional houses, and rocky cliffs that dramatically overlook the ocean.
Next, we delve into the core of the island to visit Ahu Akivi, known for its distinctive seven moai gazing towards the sea, a rarity for Easter Island. Legend has it that these figures symbolize the explorers dispatched by the fabled king Hotu Matu'a. Here, we will spend approximately 30 minutes uncovering its history and appreciating these formidable statues.
Our journey continues to Ana Te Pahu, the island's most extensive cave system, formed by ancient lava tubes. Commonly known as the “Cave of the Banana Trees,” this site was once a sanctuary and a place of worship for the early residents. It’s a location brimming with enigma and vitality!
Our final stop will be Puna Pau, a minor quarry of red volcanic rock. This site was where the pukao, the ceremonial headwear adorning some statues, were fashioned. Enjoy the breathtaking views of Hanga Roa while exploring this unique location and learning about the remarkable craftsmanship of the Rapa Nui people.
We will conclude this 6-hour excursion with a return to your hotel in Hanga Roa.
