Holy Island & Alnwick Castle Day Trip
Description
Embark on a journey through the historical landscapes of Northumbria: uncover the remnants of ancient castles, charming villages, and dramatic coastlines in North-East England during this day trip from Edinburgh.
Day Trip to Holy Island & Alnwick Castle
At the start of your adventure, you'll gather in central Edinburgh before boarding a luxurious coach and heading southward, leaving Scotland behind for the enchanting northeast of England. Traveling along a picturesque coastal route, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the rugged terrain that envelops you.
Your first destination will be Holy Island, known for its captivating history that stretches back to the 6th century. Linked to the scenic village of Lindisfarne by a tidal causeway, this island has served as a site of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. Here, you will have the chance to explore the historic ruins of the Priory and the ancient Castle, as well as taste the renowned mead traditionally crafted by the island’s monks.
Continuing southward, you will head towards Alnwick. This vibrant market town is also home to the stunning 11th-century Alnwick Castle, one of Northumberland's architectural marvels. You’ll have time to leisurely wander through the town center or delve into the Medieval castle complex and its beautiful gardens, featuring the majestic Grand Cascade. The grounds may look familiar, as they were chosen as a backdrop for scenes in the Harry Potter films!
As the day progresses, you will journey back north, crossing the River Tweed into the quaint historic settlement of Coldstream, positioned along the English-Scottish border. If time permits, a stop will be made at the remarkably preserved Flodden Field, the site of the infamous battle in 1513 that led to the demise of James IV, King of Scots.
Your enriching day will conclude with your return to Edinburgh, arriving around 6:15 pm.
