Day Trip to the West Highland Lochs, Mountains & Castles
Starting in Edinburgh, we will journey westward to our initial destination, Doune Castle. This remarkable medieval fortress may be familiar to you from popular TV shows and movies such as Game of Thrones, Outlander, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Along the way, we will pass by the notable Stirling Castle, perched atop its volcanic rock, the impressive Wallace Monument, and the striking sculptures known as The Kelpies. As we delve deeper into the Highlands, we will admire the breathtaking Loch Lubnaig and ascend through the captivating Glen Ogle, where we will take a break for lunch while enjoying the picturesque landscape.
Post-lunch, we will continue our journey into the heart of the Highlands, passing the stunning Kilchurn Castle, recognized as one of Scotland's most photographed castles. This remarkable structure juts out into the serene Loch Awe, beautifully framed by imposing mountains. Next, we will visit Inveraray, a delightful small town established in the mid-18th century, located on the banks of Loch Fyne. Here, you can explore the local shops for Highland mementos, or optionally tour the renowned Inveraray Castle (available from April to September), the historic residence of the Duke of Argyll, leader of the Clan Campbell, set amidst expansive and stunning gardens with views over Loch Fyne. Inveraray Castle is also featured in the much-loved TV series Downton Abbey.
Commencing our return trip, we will traverse the scenic Arrochar Alps, pausing briefly near the summit of the Rest and Be Thankful Pass for some fresh air. Shortly thereafter, our journey will include a stop at the famed Green Welly, followed by a visit to the historic Kings Knot for a memorable photo opportunity against the backdrop of Stirling Castle.
Lastly, we will conclude our adventure and make our way back to the starting point after this comprehensive 10.5-hour exploration.
