Tajogaite Volcano Hike
Description
Embark on a remarkable hiking experience at the Tajogaite Volcano, where you will be treated to breathtaking vistas shaped by the events of the Cumbre Vieja eruption on September 19, 2021.
Tajogaite Volcano Hike
At the scheduled time, we will gather at the El Paso Tourist Information Office (CIT Insular) to commence our hiking journey around the Cumbre Vieja volcano. Throughout this excursion, we will delve into the recent volcanic activities on La Palma and witness the significant landscape transformations following the 2021 eruption.
Once introductions are made, we will take a taxi to the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, reaching Llano del Jable in the El Paso locality, situated at 1200 meters (4000 feet) elevation. During our ride, insights will be shared regarding the formation of La Palma and also El Hierro, recognized as the youngest among the Canary Islands.
Upon arrival, we will engage in a stroll across the ash and lapilli terrain. You'll discover how local flora has been impacted and witness the recovery initiatives for the Canary Pine. Furthermore, we'll highlight the towns that experienced the most severe impact.
After covering a distance of 2.5 km (1.5 mi), we will find ourselves roughly 300 meters (984 feet) from the crater of the newly established Tajogaite Volcano. This vantage point offers stunning views of the lava flow that previously devastated several populated regions in the Aridane Valley, fundamentally altering both the island’s landscape and the lives of its residents.
Our adventure will conclude as we retrace our steps, completing a total hike of 5 km (3.1 mi). After approximately 3 to 3.5 hours of exploration, we will bid farewell to this unforgettable experience.
7-Kilometre Hike
For those seeking an elevated challenge, consider opting for the more demanding 7 km (4.3 mi) hike, tailored for participants aged 10 and above, bringing us even closer to the crater.
Upon our arrival at Llano del Hable, we will initially follow the earlier part of the trail but will then diverge onto a local path that leads into an old area rich in fig, mulberry, and chestnut trees. We will continue by descending a steep trail brimming with pyroclasts, which will take us directly to the volcanic vents. The vivid colors, fumaroles, and the extent of destruction will deeply impress you.
We will return to the trailhead by navigating around the east side of the volcanic cone. After about 4 to 4.5 hours, we will arrive back at our original gathering point by vehicle, totaling approximately 4 hours since the start of our journey.
Difficulty Level
For the 5 km (3.1 mi) trail, participants should have some hiking experience or be in good physical shape. The 7 km (4.3 mi) trail requires better physical condition. It’s important to note that both routes traverse sandy terrains, and the summer heat may pose additional challenges.
Children may join under parental supervision, who should evaluate their child’s capability for the hike. For the 5 km (3.1 mi) route, children aged 5 and up are welcome. The recommended minimum age for the 7 km (4.3 mi) trail is 10 years.
