Description
Discover the historic charm of this fortified city known for its Gothic and Manueline architecture through an engaging guided exploration of Estremoz.
Guided Exploration of Estremoz
We will convene at the Tourist Office of Casa de Estremoz at the scheduled time to embark on a captivating journey through this remarkable city in Alentejo.
Our stroll will take us down Rossio Marquês de Pombal street, where we will admire the exquisite marble façades. This abundant material is a hallmark of the region, thanks to the numerous quarries surrounding Estremoz. Remarkably, this city ranks among the top marble producers globally.
Continuing our walk, we will arrive at the Gadanha lake and fountain, a site of strategic significance for the military in the 18th century. Here, we will pause at the pillory, where those sentenced to death faced their fate during the reign of Manuel I.
The next highlight will be the majestic medieval castle of Estremoz. As we admire its architectural grandeur, we will uncover tales of the royalty and aristocracy that once resided within its walls. Don’t miss the impressive keep, a towering marble structure standing at an astonishing 27 meters.
We will also visit the Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Socorro, a beautiful monastery from the 17th century associated with the Order of the Discalced Augustinians.
After two and a half hours of uncovering the history of Estremoz, we will return to our original meeting point to conclude the tour.
