Ria Formosa Birdwatching Tour
Description
Explore the avian world in Ria Formosa through this delightful boat excursion departing from Faro. Prepare to encounter a variety of bird species, including the elegant white stork, the curlew, and the oystercatcher!
Birdwatching Adventure in Ria Formosa
We will convene at the designated time at the Faro pier, specifically at the Passeio Abu Sào Ibn Harune. Here, you will board a comfortable pontoon boat as we begin our journey to the Ria Formosa, a stunning natural reserve nestled in the Algarve region.
As we embark on our cruise, you will discover the reason why Ria Formosa is acclaimed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Portugal. Grab your binoculars and prepare for a thrilling birdwatching experience!
Your observation will include a variety of aquatic birds, such as white storks, little egrets, and spoonbills. During the winter months, we will encounter a larger presence of wading birds, while smaller species like curlews, plovers, and stonechats can be seen throughout the year in the estuary.
The excursion will take us alongside various oyster and clam farms, where you’ll gain insight into the significance of shellfish fishing within this southern Portuguese enclave. Keep your eyes peeled for birds that thrive on shellfish, such as oystercatchers and black-tailed godwits.
As we navigate towards the mouth of the estuary, we will pause to relish the breathtaking views of this ecological haven and continue our exploration of its bird population. This estuarine habitat serves as a nesting ground for various species, including little terns and plovers, with the chance of spotting flamingos during the winter season!
After an enriching two hours of birdwatching in Ria Formosa, we will return to the dock in Faro, concluding our memorable experience.
