Exploring Birdlife at Mahaica River

Your adventure begins at 4:30 am with a pickup from your accommodation in Georgetown. As dawn breaks, we'll journey along the Demerara coast towards the Mahaica River, one of Guyana's longest waterways.

After an hour's drive, we will board a boat to navigate upstream under the rising sun, searching for the diverse avian species inhabiting this expansive ecosystem. The major attraction will be the Hoatzin, the country's emblematic bird.

During our exploration along the Mahaica River, you'll discover the fascinating traits of the Hoatzin. For instance, did you know it possesses an intestinal structure akin to that of cows and goats? Or that it is a direct descendant of the ancient feathered dinosaur known as Archaeopteryx?

In addition to the Hoatzin, watch for other remarkable species, including the blood-colored woodpecker, white-bellied grosbeak, crab hawk, green-tailed jacamar, and the little Cuckoo. While observing these incredible birds, you may also spot wildlife such as otters and monkeys along the riverbank.

Throughout this journey, we will delve into the exquisite flora and vegetation lining the Mahaica River. At the conclusion of the boat ride, we'll head back to land to enjoy a traditional local breakfast at a nearby riverside restaurant.
