Historic Georgetown + Cooking Class
Description
Join us on an enlightening journey through the rich and complex history of Guyana as we delve into the slave trade in Georgetown and partake in a hands-on cooking class showcasing traditional Guyanese dishes.
Description
Your adventure begins with a pickup from your hotel at the appointed time, setting the stage for an in-depth exploration of Georgetown and its historical ties to the painful legacy of slavery. Prepare to discover this important narrative woven into the fabric of the nation.
Our journey will commence at the 1763 Monument, an emotional homage to Guyana's first slave revolt. Here, we will reflect on the incredible stories of courage from the enslaved individuals who challenged oppression.
Next, we will head to the 1823 Rebellion Monument, where we'll learn about the significant contributions of the Church and abolitionists during this crucial period of resistance.
Continuing eastward, we will visit Victoria, the first town purchased by freed slaves in Guyana. A leisurely stroll through its streets will lead us to the Buxton neighborhood, a site of immense importance in the fight for freedom, marking an extraordinary chapter in the struggles of the enslaved.
Your experience will include a stop at the train station that was at the center of a protest led by former slaves against oppressive tax measures. What enhances this experience is the opportunity to hear the gripping history from an actual raider involved in the protest. Additionally, we will explore the Buxton Amistad Museum, which provides further insights into the historical context of slavery in Guyana.
To conclude our journey, we will visit a local restaurant where a special cooking class awaits, featuring traditional meals such as cook-up rice, metemgee with pumpkin dumplings, and congee, a delightful coconut dessert. Our culinary adventure will end with us enjoying the fruits of our labor while taking in a live music performance that celebrates the culture.
After approximately six hours of rich cultural engagement and culinary delight, we will wrap up this memorable tour.
