Ghent Evening Exploration
Ghent stands as a magnificent city, where the past reverberates through its streets. The medieval essence is most evident from the Sint-Michielsplein bridge, our meeting point at 6 pm. After a concise introduction about the city's origins, we will proceed along the Graslei pier, delving into its historical significance.
As we meander alongside the picturesque canals of the River Lys, we will reach Appelbrugparkje park, where stories of the condemned and their final moments await. Close by, we will encounter the Hoofdbrug, known as the "Bridge of the Beheadings". This vantage point provides splendid views of the Gravensteen, the formidable castle of the counts of Ghent.
Next, we will visit the ancient Royal Palace ruins, the birthplace of Charles V. This powerful king and emperor was not known for his leniency towards rebellious neighbors, often referred to as "the Ghent hanged men". Throughout our journey, we will share various legends and intriguing anecdotes about this influential figure of 16th-century Europe.
Our journey will then take us to the Augustijnenklooster, an historic monastery, where we will discuss the religious oppression experienced in Ghent. The Spanish King, Philip II, alongside his renowned military leader, the Duke of Alba, ruthlessly quashed any signs of Protestantism in the Netherlands.
Concluding our tour at 7:30 pm, we will arrive at the Patershol, a stunning medieval quarter laden with enigmas waiting to be unraveled...
