Embark on a journey to uncover the historical and natural wonders of Asturias through a captivating day trip that spans from coastal areas to the Picos de Europa. Along the way, we will explore the renowned Covadonga Lakes, the Sanctuary, the Roman bridge in Cangas de Onís, and the charming fishing village of Lastres. An intriguing adventure awaits you in Asturias!

Day Trip Overview

Our adventure begins at a key location in central Gijón, from where we will journey into the heart of Asturias, particularly to the Picos de Europa National Park.

Our first destination is one of the most picturesque natural locations in northern Spain: the Covadonga Lakes. Here, we will savor breathtaking views from the Entrelagos viewpoint, admiring the pristine waters of Lakes Enol and Ercina, while learning about their origins during the Ice Age.

Subsequently, we will visit the grand Basilica of Santa María la Real de Covadonga, designed in a neo-Romanesque style, and explore the story of Don Pelayo and the onset of the Reconquest. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Holy Cave, which is home to the Virgin of Covadonga, affectionately known as La Santina. We will also stop by the Royal Pantheon, where the remains of esteemed Asturian monarchs lie.

Next, we will make our way to Cangas de Onís, where you can wander and discover its historical significance as the original capital of the Kingdom of Asturias. Following this, you will have a two-hour window to enjoy lunch and capture stunning photos by the iconic Roman bridge. Be sure to photograph the Cross of Victory, a notable emblem of Asturias, which hangs beneath the bridge's arch.

In the afternoon, our excursion will lead us back to the coastline, specifically to the charming village of Lastres. A guided exploration of this fishing community will reveal its steep streets and breathtaking vistas of the Cantabrian Sea.

Concluding our day, we will return to the original meeting point in Gijón, marking the end of this 11-hour journey.

Please be aware that the Covadonga Lakes are situated within the Picos de Europa National Park, which regulates parking and accessibility. There may be instances when the park restricts access for organizational purposes, or the duration of our time at the lakes might be shortened without prior indication, as it is a national park. Should this occur, we will allocate additional time to the other scheduled stops during the day trip.

Depending on the designated parking area by the park, reaching the Covadonga Lakes may involve ascending either 200 or 400 steps.
