Activity Overview

The adventure commences at 38100 Glenn Highway, where we will gather for a safety briefing and distribute the essential gear required for our climbing journey.

Following this, we'll embark on a brief 15-minute drive to the ascent point that introduces us to the Matanuska Glacier. Are you ready to dive into the excitement ahead?

Upon arrival at the climbing site, we will encounter ice walls that extend to 15 m (49 ft), perfect for novices. Utilizing a top-rope system, we will ascend safely while acquiring fundamental techniques for vertical movement on glacial ice.

With ice axes in hand and crampons securely attached, we will traverse through expertly sculpted surfaces formed by the natural cycles of melting and refreezing. Throughout our journey, we’ll delve into the fascinating cryogenic ecosystem that thrives in this seemingly harsh wilderness.

Our path will also lead us into expansive crevasses, offering a chance to observe the inner workings of the Matanuska Glacier, with layers of stratified ice on display. Did you know that these crevasses can reach depths of several meters?

As we take a moment to relax and regain our energy, we’ll enjoy a break amid this stunning backdrop, refueling with the meals you’ve packed.

Upon concluding our expedition, we'll return to our vehicle and head back to the initial gathering point, parting ways after an exhilarating 8-hour journey through the breathtaking wilderness of Alaska.

Admission Not Included

The entrance fee for the Matanuska Glacier is not included and costs 55USD for adults, 25USD for children aged 13 to 16, 30USD for residents, military personnel and those aged 65 and over, and is free for children under 13.

Important Info

Please note that, for the use of boots and crampons, the minimum shoe size is 38 for men (5 US men) and 35 for women (4.5 US women). The maximum size is 49 (14 US men).
The maximum weight allowed for this activity is 113 kg (249 lb), and the minimum weight is 45 kg (99 lb), and the maximum waist circumference is 127 cm (50 in).
This activity is suitable for people ages 12 and older and under 65.
No prior experience of ice climbing is required.
