Tour of Alhambra's Surroundings & Palace of Charles V
Description
During this exploration of the Alhambra's vicinity, we will uncover the various locations that constitute this iconic site in Granada, all of which can be accessed without a fee: the Palace of Charles V, the Gates of Justice and Wine, the enchanting gardens surrounding the Convent of San Francisco, and the archaeological remains of the Palace of the Abencerrajes.
Tour Overview
The Alhambra monumental complex in Granada, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a diverse range of areas accessible without a ticket. We will gather at the scheduled meeting point located at the Polinario Café Bar to commence our journey.
We will start by delving into the significance of the Gate of Justice before proceeding towards the Gate of Wine. Following that, we will embark on a guided exploration of the sections within the Alhambra that allow free access. While walking through these historic spaces, participants can take in the stunning views of Albacín, one of Granada's most picturesque neighborhoods.
Additionally, we will admire from a distance the turrets and fortifications of the Alcazaba, a 13th-century stronghold that safeguarded the palaces of Mexuar, Comares, and the Lions, the latter of which features a renowned stone fountain. Although interior access to the Nasrid Palaces is not included, we will share insights regarding their architectural significance and historical context.
Our journey continues with a visit to the Palace of Charles V, a remarkable Renaissance edifice established by one of the most influential figures in Europe during the 16th century. Notably, this was the venue where he celebrated his honeymoon with Isabel of Portugal in the Alhambra.
Adjacent to this palace, we will explore the Church of Santa María de la Encarnación and the Convent of San Francisco. This Franciscan monastic site, founded in 1494, was established shortly after the Catholic Monarchs recaptured Granada. Participants are welcome to wander through the gardens of this historic monastery, which now operates as a 4-star Parador.
In conclusion, after dedicating approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to traversing the freely accessible sectors of the Alhambra, we will wrap up our outing with a visit to the archaeological remains of the Palace of the Abencerrajes, a notable lineage within the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada.
