Zapatera & El Muerto Islands Day Trip
Description
Join us on this day trip to Zapatera and El Muerto Islands from Granada to visit an indigenous community and explore archaeological remains that date back thousands of years.
Day Trip Details
Your adventure begins with a pick-up at your hotel in Granada. We will proceed to one of the docks along Lake Cocibolca. After a brief 10-minute ride, we will arrive at the port of Cabañas Amarillas to board a boat for a tranquil 1.5-hour journey.
As we sail across the lake, admire the stunning landscape with the Mombacho Volcano in the distance. Our first stop will be at Zapatera Island, the second-largest island on the lake.
Upon arrival, we will visit the indigenous community of Sonzapote for a guided 1-hour stroll with local tribe members. This is followed by a visit to the archaeological site, where you will encounter pre-Columbian idols carved in stone, some towering up to 2 m (6 ft 5 in).
After exploring these ancestral vestiges, we will take a break to enjoy a fruit snack. Once refreshed, we’ll return to the boat and make our way to El Muerto Island.
Just a few minutes later, we will reach this private island, where we’ll spend an hour discovering the small square of El Muerto Island. Here, we will examine rock art on volcanic stones, which depicts unique symbolic figures, scenes of daily life, ceremonial representations, and astronomical calendars—providing a fascinating insight into over a thousand years of history!
Finally, we will set sail back to the Cabañas Amarillas dock. From there, we will return to your hotel in Granada, concluding this enriching experience approximately 6 hours after departure.
