Cacique Guatapé Caves Day Trip
Description
Experience an enriching adventure on this excursion to the Cacique Guatapé Caves, where you will delve into a network of ancient caves that served as shelters and sacred sites for historic indigenous civilizations.
Trip Overview
We will gather at the designated time at the central park of Guatapé, right in front of the church. Our journey will commence with a short bus ride lasting 20 minutes, taking us to the start of the trail that leads to the Cacique Guatapé Caves.
Upon arrival, we will embark on a leisurely half-hour hike through a path adorned with native vegetation, rich in floricultural and faunistic diversity. This serene environment serves as an ideal prelude to the underground exploration that awaits us.
As you approach the cave’s entrance, the vastness of the site will become apparent. Before venturing inside, you will need to decide whether to descend on foot or to rappel down. Inside the caves, a captivating 1.5-hour guided adventure will commence.
This journey will transport you back in time, surrounded by imposing rocks with unique forms sculpted by the area’s moisture, while we share captivating tales of the site, steeped in mystery.
Throughout our exploration, we will navigate through the various chambers, each playing a significant role in the lives of the ancient populations: the first chamber, capable of accommodating over 2,000 individuals, served as a crucial refuge from harsh weather. This location was highly revered, hosting rituals performed by its original inhabitants.
Next, we will reach the second chamber, where it is believed the indigenous people would rest on small ledges. The third area is a more secluded space, featuring a stone door for protection against invaders.
The fourth room presents an enigma: two massive stone walls leaning against one another, forming a triangular area. When illuminated, the walls reflect golden sparkles from the minerals, resembling hues of gold. Exiting the cavern will leave you feeling revitalized.
Finally, we will return to our original meeting point, concluding our adventure after approximately 5 hours.
