Snorkelling in Havana
Description
At the ocean's depths off the coast of Havana lies a 19th-century shipwreck. Embark on a snorkelling adventure to explore its remnants and uncover the fascinating story behind this maritime relic.
Snorkelling Experience in Havana
Picture the late 1800s, a time shadowed by military conflict as Spain, the United States, and Cuba grapple for power and independence. Echoes of this turbulent era are still submerged in the Caribbean Sea. To witness these historical remnants, we’ll collect you at 9:30 am from the entrance of the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana in a classic American car from the 1950s.
In approximately 30 minutes, we will arrive at the beach located 10 kilometers east of Havana. Upon arrival, an introductory session awaits, which includes physical warm-up exercises and essential safety protocols for our upcoming adventure. Once prepared, we'll don our masks and gear up to take the plunge. Two experienced guides will accompany us throughout the experience, equipped with buoyancy aids for added safety.
Depending on the group’s physical fitness and prevailing sea conditions, we will explore one of two shipwrecks: the City of Alexandria (300 meters offshore, requiring about one hour for the round trip) or the SS Olivette (750 meters away, with a total swimming time of approximately one and a half hours).
The SS Olivette went down in 1918, while the City of Alexandria met its fate in 1893. Both wrecks hold significant historical value for Cuba, and we will have the opportunity to view these partially submerged ruins up close. To conclude our snorkelling journey, we will return to shore and indulge in some refreshing coconut water.
After our exploration, we will change out of our wetsuits and return to the initial meeting point at 2 pm in the same classic American vehicle that brought us here.
