Momon or San Antonio Rivers 6 or 7-Day Cruise
Description
This 6 to 7-day expedition commencing from Iquitos will take you along the Momon and San Antonio rivers, delve into the Amazon basin, and allow for an immersion in a local riverside community.
Description
Day 1
Your adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Iquitos or airport. We will then head to the city’s riverport to kick-start our journey with a scenic boat ride on the Amazon River, the world’s largest river.
As we navigate the waters, several stops will enhance your experience. Our first destination is a natural reserve, where you will encounter the magnificent Victoria Regia, the largest aquatic plant globally. We will then proceed to an animal sanctuary featuring an array of Amazonian wildlife such as monkeys, toucans, and anacondas.
After our sanctuary visit, we will continue downstream, entering the Nanay and Momon Rivers. Once we reach the mouth of the Momon River, we will arrive at our planned campsite for an overnight stay.
Lunch will be served at the camp before we embark on a short hike through the Amazon jungle to interact with the Boras tribe. We will wrap up our first day with dinner and a night excursion into the jungle to observe nocturnal birds before returning to camp.
Day 2
Starting bright and early, we'll enjoy birdwatching at sunrise before returning to camp for breakfast. Next, a boat ride down the Momon River will take us toward the Nanay, Amazon, and Itaya Rivers.
A notable stop will feature stunning sequoia trees, towering up to 70 meters (229 feet). After appreciating these natural giants, we will return to our campsite for lunch and then partake in piranha fishing in the nearby waters.
As the day concludes, we will gather for dinner and finish with a film showcasing the Momon River region before settling in for the night.
Day 3
Day 3 begins with another sunrise birdwatching session, after which we will enjoy breakfast. We will then set off for the Padrecocha village to admire the famous butterfly species found there.
Noon will take us back to camp for lunch. Post-lunch, an exhilarating kayak tour along the Momon River awaits.
The evening will be spent relaxing at the campsite, concluding our day with good company and good food.
Day 4
After breakfast, we will navigate the Momon, Nanay, Amazon, and Itaya rivers. At their confluence, keep an eye out for the friendly pink dolphins. Our exploration will continue in Belen, often referred to as the Venice of the Amazon.
After investigating the canals of Belen, we will return to the campsite for lunch. The afternoon will take us to the native community of San Andres, where the locals will share their customs and traditions, offering a rich cultural experience.
In the late afternoon, we will head back to the lodge for dinner, followed by a night walk to experience the sounds of the Amazon at night.
Day 5
After breakfast, we will set sail down the Momon River toward the riverside community of San Antonio. Upon arrival, a brief hike will reveal the stunning giant trees known as renacos and lupunas.
After exploring San Antonio, it will be time to return to the lodge for lunch. The rest of the afternoon will be yours to relax and explore the surroundings. In the evening, we will gather for a night jungle walk before returning to camp for some rest.
Day 6
Following a hearty breakfast at camp, we will head to the Bellavista port for a tour of Iquitos, combining walking and minibus transport. Highlights include a visit to the Plaza de Armas to see the Casa de Hierro, designed by Gustave Eiffel.
We will also explore the Amazon Museum, housing 80 sculptures from various Amazonian ethnic groups. Next, a visit to the Belen neighborhood will lead you to its famous floating market, followed by a stop at Quistococha, dedicated to the preservation of rescued Amazonian wildlife.
After close encounters with these animals, lunch will be served at a local restaurant in Quistococha, featuring regional cuisine. Subsequently, we will provide transportation back to your hotel in Iquitos or the airport, with an estimated arrival time of 5 PM.
