Huelva: On the Trail of Christopher Columbus
Description
Discover the legacy of Christopher Columbus on this captivating journey. Immerse yourself in the historical sites that the iconic navigator frequented when preparing for his momentous voyage to the Americas.
Huelva: Following Columbus' Footsteps
After being picked up from your selected location, your adventure will commence along the "lugares colombinos", tracing the historic path across the province of Huelva that Columbus explored. As you travel towards Palos de la Frontera, your knowledgeable local guide will shed light on the rich history of this ancient fishing settlement.
Upon reaching Palos de la Frontera, you will visit significant locations associated with Columbus, beginning with the 13th-century Franciscan structure known as La Rábida Friary. It was in this venerable stone monastery that Columbus sought refuge with the monks after facing rejection from the monarchy regarding his expedition in 1490. This site has held the designation of Spanish National Monument since 1856.
Continuing from La Rábida, your journey will take you to the renowned Wharf of the Caravels. This museum is dedicated to narrating the adventures of Columbus, featuring a meticulous reproduction of the Medieval Palos harbor from which the journey began. Here, you will encounter life-sized replicas of the legendary vessels that embarked on that inaugural trip to the Americas: the Pinta, the Niña, and the Santa María.
Within the Wharf of the Caravels, you are also invited to explore the Isla del Encuentro, or the "Island of Discovery", which recreates the experiences that Columbus and his crew may have encountered upon their arrival in the "New World".
Once you have delved into Columbus' historic trail through Huelva, you will be transported back to the original pickup location in the city center.
