Kochi Free Walking Tour
Description
Explore the remnants of ancient fortresses and captivating churches in Europe while uncovering the rich historical tapestry of southern India on this complimentary walking tour in Kochi.
Tour Overview
Kochi bears the imprints of various colonial powers, including the Spanish, Portuguese, and later, the English, creating a unique historical heritage. Our journey begins near the renowned Chinese fishing nets, where you'll have the opportunity to observe the local fishermen skillfully operating this unique fishing method.
Following our introduction, we will stroll to the Vasco da Gama Square, where you will hear tales of Portuguese commerce and their influence in the area. We will continue down the vibrant streets until we arrive at the Church of Saint Francis, known as India’s oldest European church and the final resting place of Vasco da Gama.
Next, we will visit the Dutch Cemetery, where you can view the tombstones of Dutch settlers while discussing their early colonization efforts—prepare to be impressed by the diverse cultural influences that have sculpted Kochi!
Our journey will then lead us to the entrance of the Indo-Portuguese Museum, a compact yet remarkable institution filled with art and historical objects illustrating the arrival of the Portuguese in India. We will also explore the splendid Cathedral Basilica of Santa Cruz, celebrated for its colonial architectural style—a perfect spot to admire the blend of design traditions!
Following our visit to these locations, we will pass the Cochin Cultural Centre and conclude our tour at the Jail of Freedom Struggle, a significant historical site where notable leaders of India's independence movement were incarcerated. Here, you will learn about the pivotal struggles and sacrifices that paved the path to freedom.
We will wrap up our complimentary tour after approximately two hours, bidding farewell at this pivotal site.
