Description
Description
Embark on a journey through a unique historical landscape with this complimentary tour of Nowa Huta, a city meticulously crafted in the aftermath of World War II during the communist era. Discover the significant events that have shaped its past.
Nowa Huta Free Tour
Our meeting point is Central Square, situated in the Nowa Huta district, on the fringes of Krakow. Here, we will commence our exploration of this distinctive city and delve into its origins and purpose.
Breathe in the atmosphere as we traverse the five grand avenues radiating from the central plaza, ingeniously designed in a star formation with the local workforce of the Huta im. T. Sendzimira factory in mind.
Our path will lead us along Aleja Ró? (Avenue of Roses), a central point for commerce and social interaction where a monumental statue of Lenin once stood proudly until 1989. This statue served as a potent reminder to the residents that socialism held the utmost importance, highlighting the pivotal role of propaganda over religion and the expectation of unwavering loyalty to the regime.
Our next stop will be a poignant emblem of spiritual defiance: the Lord's Ark Church. This church represents a crucial facet of the societal struggle against communism, advocating for the right to worship freely. Its historical ties to Pope John Paul II and the Solidarity trade union will be explored in detail during the tour.
After approximately two hours of insightful exploration, we will return to our original meeting point, concluding our free tour of the communist heritage of Nowa Huta.
