Description

Experience the wonders of Las Médulas, the remnants of the largest gold extraction site of the Roman Empire and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, through this guided trek in one of Spain's most remarkable landscapes.

Tour Overview

We will gather at the Complejo Rural Agoga located in the village of Las Médulas, where our adventure will commence. Are you prepared to uncover this surreal terrain?

Our journey begins along the Valiñas Path, a circular trail leading from the village into the core of the ancient mining site. As we traverse this remarkable area, we'll delve into its history, which predates the Roman conquest. This territory was once inhabited by a Celtic tribe known as the Astures during the Iron Age, who constructed formidable hillforts and skillfully crafted gold into exquisite adornments, appreciating its aesthetic appeal over its material worth.

As we walk at a lower elevation through these historical works, the magnitude of Roman engineering will become apparent: entire mountains were intentionally demolished to access the gold within, accompanied by an expansive system of water channels that facilitated the extraction process.

We will visit the Encantada and Cuevona caves, two spectacular locations hewn from the mountainside, where the grandeur of Roman engineering is undeniably evident.

Concluding our exploration, we'll return to the village via an alternate route, completing this enthralling 2-hour journey back at our starting location in Las Médulas.
