Belém + Jerónimos Monastery Tour
Description
If you are eager to experience the illustrious history of the Portuguese empire, we invite you to embark on a journey through the Belém district and the Jerónimos Monastery. This tour will immerse you in the rich heritage of the area, allowing you to discover its significant sites, including the renowned Manueline-style monastery.
Tour Overview
We will gather near the Jerónimos Monastery at the designated time. After an insightful introduction, we will enter this remarkable Manueline-style edifice. Are you prepared to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and uncover the pivotal role that the Belém area played in the history of Portugal?
Our first stop will be the upper cloister, where we will take in the breathtaking architecture of this historical jewel. Here, you will learn about the significance of the monastery, its symbolism for Portuguese society, and its importance during the Portuguese maritime explorations of the 15th and 16th centuries.
As we proceed to the lower cloister, we will delve into key areas such as the Chapter Room, the ancient Refectory, and the tomb of Fernando Pessoa, which was relocated to this site in the 20th century.
Following our discovery of the Jerónimos Monastery, we will wander through Belém, stopping first at the iconic Pastéis de Belém bakery. Here, you will indulge in a delightful custard tart, a secret recipe developed by the monastery's monks and produced at this location since the 1800s.
Our exploration will then lead us to the Monument of the Discoveries, constructed in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Prince Henry the Navigator's death—an influential figure during the Age of Discovery. This monument also pays tribute to other notable historic figures who contributed to the expansion of Portuguese influence around the world.
We will take a brief 15-minute stroll to reach the iconic Belém Tower, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This impressive Manueline-style building once acted as a fortification, safeguarding the harbor of Lisbon.
As we complete this enriching excursion, we will extend our farewells after a total duration of 3 to 4 hours.
