Belém + Jerónimos Monastery Tour
Description
Have you ever wanted to experience the vibrant history of the Portuguese Empire? Join us for a guided exploration of Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery. This visit promises to immerse you in the historical significance of the area and its architectural marvels.
Tour Overview
We will convene in close proximity to the Jerónimos Monastery at the scheduled time. After a concise introduction, we’ll enter this magnificent example of Manueline architecture. Are you prepared to discover this UNESCO World Heritage Site and understand the pivotal role the Belém region played in Portugal’s history?
During our visit, we will take in the breathtaking cloisters, revered as prime examples of Manueline design, while delving into their historical and cultural significance during the prosperous 15th and 16th centuries. Depending on the specific route of our tour, there may be an opportunity to view significant areas within the monastery, including the tomb of Fernando Pessoa, relocated to this site in the 20th century.
Following our exploration of the Jerónimos Monastery, we will take a walk to discover other notable landmarks in Belém, such as the Monument of the Discoveries. Erected in 1960 to commemorate 500 years since the passing of Prince Henry the Navigator, a key figure of the Age of Discovery, the monument features various important personalities that contributed to the expansion of Portuguese influence around the world.
Continuing our journey, we’ll enjoy a pleasant 15-minute stroll to the renowned Belém Tower, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will admire this remarkable Manueline structure from the outside, which historically functioned as a defensive tower safeguarding Lisbon's harbor.
Our tour will conclude with farewells after an enriching experience lasting between 2 and 4 hours.
