Tour Overview
Have you visited Lisbon's most iconic area? Our journey begins at the Jardim de Afonso de Albuquerque, setting the stage for this private walking tour in Belém. From this scenic garden, our path will lead us to the National Palace of Belém, which serves as the official residence for the President of Portugal.
We’ll stroll down Rua Vieira Portuense, a charming street filled with quaint shops, until we arrive at one of the city's culinary gems: the famed Pastéis de Belém factory. Here, you’ll discover the history behind these delectable pastries, closely tied to the adjacent monastery.
Not far from there, we'll visit the Sala Thai pavilion—a memorable gift from Thailand to Portugal that adds a unique element to Belém, reflecting the historical connections between the nations.
Next, our exploration will take us to the Church of Santa Maria de Belém and the Jerónimos Monastery, both of which we'll appreciate from the exterior. We’ll take a moment to delve into the details of its Manueline style, a vibrant architectural form infused with nautical themes and symbols of Portugal's imperial ambitions.
Continuing our journey, we will traverse the Praça do Império to view the striking Rosa dos Vientos (Compass Rose), an expansive mosaic celebrating Portugal's age of exploration. Subsequently, we’ll approach the Monument to the Discoveries, a monumental tribute to navigators and cartographers, along with the Belém Lighthouse, before we walk past the lush gardens surrounding the Belém Tower.
We will pause to admire this late Gothic defensive structure, crafted along the Tagus River as a fortress and ceremonial entrance to Lisbon. Here, the significance of Belém as a pivotal point of Portugal during the Age of Discovery will become clear.
After approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, we will conclude our tour beside the Belém Tower.
