Reasons to Explore the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora
Located on a prominent hill overlooking the Tagus River and in proximity to the National Pantheon of Portugal, the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora stands as a remarkable structure honoring the patron saint of Lisbon.
In 1147, during the Christian siege, Afonso I, the inaugural king of Portugal, vowed to construct a monastery dedicated to Saint Vincent if he successfully took control of the city from the Muslims. The monastery was established in the same year, just outside the city walls, leading to its unique name.
Your entry to the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora enables you to wander through the grounds at your leisure, taking in the stunning walls adorned with a remarkable collection of Baroque tiles. Originating from the 17th and 18th centuries, these tiles depict a variety of narratives, from significant historical occurrences to hunting scenes, rural romances, and fables narrated by La Fontaine.
Additionally, the monastery features an ancient cistern from the 12th century, two impressive cloisters, a Mannerism-style church, and a sacristy. You may also visit the Pantheon of the House of Braganza, the resting place of illustrious monarchs such as Afonso VI "the Victorious," Joseph I "the Reformer," and Manuel II, the last king of Portugal known as "the Unfortunate."
Your ticket grants you access to the terraces of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora, where you can relish the stunning views of Lisbon's historic district and the banks of the Tagus River.
