Description

If you're interested in exploring the legacy of the King's Guards, securing your entry to the Household Cavalry Museum in London is essential. This museum provides insight into one of the UK's pivotal institutions.

The King's Guards

The Household Cavalry Museum narrates the history and contemporary role of the King's Guards, an eminent regiment responsible for the Changing of the Guards ceremony at Horse Guards.

With this admission, you will delve into the details of this esteemed British establishment, gaining knowledge about its historical significance and its relevance today. Throughout your exploration, you’ll encounter stories from both former and current members of the cavalry and notice their distinctive red uniforms.

Your experience will also lead you through the 18th-century stables, where you will witness soldiers performing their daily tasks, as well as engaging with numerous interactive displays and, of course, observing the guards change every hour.

The Royal Cavalry’s Heritage

Nestled at Horse Guards in Whitehall, the Household Cavalry Museum resides in one of London’s most historically significant structures. Established in 1750, it continues to serve as the headquarters for the Household Division. This institution plays a vital role as the King's Life Guard, with its ceremony remaining largely unchanged for over 350 years.

Your visit allows for an extensive understanding of the Household Cavalry's history, which was created by King Charles II in 1661. It currently comprises two of the British Army's highest-ranking regiments: the Life Guards and the Blues & Royals.

Their primary responsibilities include guarding His Majesty the King during ceremonial events, operating combat vehicles during international humanitarian missions, and engaging in peacekeeping efforts.

The museum also features the Horse Guards clock, which was, prior to Big Ben, the principal public timepiece in Westminster. It is also linked to a grim tale regarding the execution of King Charles.

The Changing of the Guards

While in London, witnessing the Changing of the Guard ceremony is an experience not to be missed. This event occurs every day at 11 am, as members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment journey from Hyde Park Barracks to relieve their compatriots stationed at Horse Guards.

The procession traverses Hyde Park Corner, Constitution Hill, and The Mall prior to reaching Horse Guards Parade, directly adjacent to the Household Cavalry Museum.

Moreover, the daily inspection happens at 4 pm in the Horse Guards Courtyard.
