Description
Experience the captivating Sahara Desert on an immersive 4-day journey departing from Marrakech. Navigate through rugged dirt roads, scenic valleys, towering mountain passes, breathtaking gorges, rolling sand dunes, and charming villages while uncovering the beauty of this distinctive landscape.
Trip Overview
Day 1: Marrakech - Aït Benhaddou - Valley of the Roses - Dadès Gorges
We will commence our adventure with a pickup from your hotel, riad, or airport, setting off towards Ouarzazate. En route, we’ll traverse the impressive Atlas Mountains, climbing through the magnificent Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass, which provides stunning panoramic views from an altitude of 2,260 meters.
Upon crossing the mountains, our first stop will be at the remarkable Aït Benhaddou Kasbah, one of Morocco's most significant fortified settlements and a celebrated filming site for classics such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Kingdom of Heaven.
We will then take the Route of the Thousand Kasbahs, passing through Skoura and reaching Kelaat M'Gouna, the picturesque town renowned as the gateway to the Valley of the Roses. The day will conclude with an overnight stay in the enchanting Dadès Gorges.
Day 2: Dadès Gorges - Todgha Gorges - Merzouga
After breakfast, we will embark towards the majestic Dadès Valley, making our way through the awe-inspiring Todgha Gorges, where we will break for lunch.
With renewed vigor, our journey will continue towards Merzouga, passing through the esteemed Jorf palm grove, known for its delicious dates, and Erfoud, famous for its fascinating fossil remnants.
Upon our arrival at Merzouga, we will exchange our vehicles for camels, allowing for a true immersion into the desert atmosphere as we trek to a Bedouin camp. Here, we will spend the night and savor a traditional Moroccan dinner.
Day 3: Merzouga - Rissani - Alnif - Tazarine - Tizi N'Tfrkhin - Ouarzazate
Day three promises to be magical as we wake early to witness the sunrise over the Sahara. After a brief camel ride, we will explore the stunning desert landscape.
Our return to Ouarzazate will take an alternate route, journeying through the Tafilalet Palm Grove and visiting the historic village of Rissani, once the capital of the Alaouite Dynasty. We will then reach Alnif and travel along the striking path through the Anti-Atlas mountain range.
After soaking in the vibrant colors and unique formations of the mountains, we will arrive at Tizi N'tfarkhin, where we can also explore the Dadès Valley and its captivating palm groves. A lunchtime break at Kelaat M'Gouna will allow time to relax and refuel before continuing our journey.
In the late afternoon, we will reach Ouarzazate, where accommodations await at a comfortable hotel/kasbah.
Day 4: Ouarzazate - Marrakech
After enjoying a hearty breakfast, you will have the morning free to explore Ouarzazate at your leisure. Recommended sites include the Taourirt Kasbah and the famous Atlas Film Studios, often referred to as the Hollywood of the desert. We will depart from Ouarzazate between noon and 3:30 PM.
Our journey back to Marrakech will conclude in the evening, depending on traffic conditions.
