Marseille Mystery Tour
We will convene at the Vieux-Port metro station, located on the Quai des Belges, a historic site where the city was founded over 2,600 years ago. This port has been a stage for numerous events, from commercial exchanges to invasions, plagues, and fierce conflicts. Here begins our mystery tour of Marseille. Are you prepared?
Our first stop will be the Marseille Chamber of Commerce and the Port Antique, where we will uncover ancient remnants concealed beneath the bustling modern city. We will then make our way to the Hôtel de Cabre, one of Marseille's oldest surviving buildings post-World War II, which has an intriguing history of being rotated 90 degrees. Following this, we’ll explore the InterContinental Marseille - Hôtel Dieu, whose roots trace back to the 12th century when it provided care for the sick, elderly, and needy children.
Next, we will venture into Le Panier, the oldest neighborhood in Marseille. This area, with its winding alleys, has been a witness to centuries of hardship, crime, and political upheaval. During World War II, Le Panier became a sanctuary for Resistance fighters, prompting the German forces to order the destruction of much of the district in 1943. We will make our way up to the Place des Moulins. Did you know a vast underground cistern from the 19th century lies beneath this square? The answer awaits you!
Following this, our journey will take us to La Vieille Charité, a historical building that served the city's impoverished for centuries, later transforming into an orphanage and hospice. We will stroll past the Place des Treize-Cantons and the Place de Lenche, where the guide will narrate the diverse history of Le Panier. Our path leads us to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, known simply as Mucem, where we will delve into Marseille's rich narrative as a meeting point of Mediterranean cultures.
In the final segment of our excursion, we will arrive at Fort Saint-Jean, an edifice steeped in tales of medieval religious orders, imprisonment, and wartime devastation. We’ll then proceed past the Villa Méditerranée and along the waterfront, taking in the striking Marseille Cathedral and its breathtaking architecture and views. Our exploration concludes at the Marseille Cathedral after approximately 1.5 hours.
