Why Visit Cosquer Méditerranée?

Discovered in 1985 by diver Henri Cosquer, the underwater cave in the Calanques National Park contains notable rock art. Its location became known in 1991 after a tragic incident involving divers. Experts confirmed that the rock art dates back to the Paleolithic Era, but the cave remains closed to visitors. Consequently, the Cosquer Méditerranée museum opened in 2022 in the port of Marseille, recreating the original cave.

With your ticket, you'll explore the museum using an English audio guide. The visit begins with an exhibition showcasing the diving gear used in the cave's discovery. A vehicle on rails will then take you through different spaces that replicate the Cosquer Cave.

The audio guide provides insights into the history of rock art and the meanings of the animals and hand prints on the cave walls. On the third floor, the Mediterranean Gallery displays life-size replicas of Ice Age animals, a pregnant Homo sapiens figure, and offers digital projections on humanity's history and climate change effects.

The Cosquer Méditerranée Museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm. Final admission is 1.5 hours before closing time.
