Tour Overview
At the scheduled time, we will convene at Via Alessandro Volta 3/5 and commence our sightseeing expedition aboard an open-top minibus. This adventure will take us past the most notable attractions in this picturesque locality in the Basilicata region.
As we travel, an English audio guide will provide insights into the history of Matera as well as intriguing details about the sites we will encounter.
Our first stop will showcase one of the key symbols representing late medieval Matera: the Tramontano Castle, situated on Lapillo Hill. Here, we will unravel the strategic significance of this 16th-century stronghold while appreciating its exterior architectural features.
We will continue our journey through the Municipal Gardens and along the Sasso Barisano, arriving at the Church of Sant'Agostino. A pause for photographs will allow us to capture the breathtaking vista from one of Matera’s prime viewpoints, overlooking the intricate rooftops, winding alleys, and dwellings carved into the stone. In the backdrop, the Gravina ravine and the Murgia Materana plateau create a remarkable scene where history, architecture, and nature harmoniously intertwine.
Next, our exploration takes us to the Casa Grotta, a cave dwelling that reflects the lifestyle in the Sassi until the 1950s. Following that, we will traverse Via Madonna delle Virtù, where we can enjoy superb views of the suspension bridge, the Gravina stream, and the expansive Murgia Materana Park.
In conclusion, we will navigate through Porta Pistola, visit Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, and make our way back to the starting point after our delightful 2-hour exploration.
