Description

Embark on a journey to one of the most picturesque villages in Basilicata with our private tour of Melfi. Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, you will delve into the rich history of the Norman Swabian castle and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

Melfi Private Tour

We will meet at your convenience at the entrance of the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be ready to welcome you in front of this remarkable fortress, which stands as the most renowned in Basilicata and ranks among the largest in southern Italy. Let the exploration begin!

Perched on a former volcanic hill and surrounded by ten towering structures, the Castle of Melfi provides a commanding view of the town below. Its captivating history dates back to the 11th century, initially constructed at the order of Roberto il Guiscardo and later expanded by Frederick II of Swabia, who selected this fortress as his summer retreat. Throughout the years, the castle has hosted numerous significant events... Interestingly, it was the setting for six papal councils, including one under the antipope Anacletus II.

As part of your visit, you’ll explore the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi located on the castle's ground floor. Here, you’ll examine artefacts unearthed in the Vulture area, including Daunian ceramics adorned with geometric patterns, as well as armor and bronze vases crafted by the Greeks and Etruscans. In the Clock Tower, you'll come across a striking Roman sarcophagus referred to as the 'Sarcophagus of Rapolla'. This piece, which dates back to the second century AD and features a depiction of the deceased in repose alongside Roman deities and heroes on its side panels, originates from workshops in Asia Minor.

The adventure continues as we make our way to the historic centre of Melfi bound for the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Constructed in 1055 under the command of Roger Guiscard, the cathedral has experienced various renovations, with its bell tower from 1153 remaining intact. Inside, you will marvel at the coffered ceiling, pulpit, throne, and organ, all crafted in the late Baroque style.

After visiting the key landmarks and immersing yourself in the beauty of the cathedral, we will conclude our private tour of Melfi.
