Coyoacán Day of the Dead Tour
Description
Embark on a journey into the heart of one of Mexico's most captivating, vibrant, and meaningful celebrations by participating in this Day of the Dead tour in Coyoacán. Experience the mystical allure of altars, listen to colonial tales, and visit a cemetery aglow with candlelight.
Day of the Dead in Coyoacán
Your adventure begins at La Casita de Coyoacán, where you will be welcomed into a lively atmosphere. Upon arrival, you’ll be adorned with light, themed makeup inspired by the iconic Catrinas, preparing you for the festivities ahead!
Following this, engage in a hands-on activity focused on a traditional Mexican altar. Here, you will learn about the profound meanings behind each component: from the aromatic copal and vivid papel picado to the guiding essence of the cempasúchil flower, along with water, salt, and the sweet pan de muerto.
We’ll then enjoy a pleasant walk to the historic center of Coyoacán. During the stroll, we’ll discuss the festival's pre-Hispanic roots, its blend with Catholic customs post-conquest, and the respectful bond the Mexican community shares with death.
A visit to the National Museum of Popular Cultures awaits, celebrated for its stunning temporary exhibits showcasing altars. Continuing our journey, we will admire the architecture of the Parish Church of San Juan Bautista and the renowned Coyote Fountain. To add sweetness to our day, you’ll get to enjoy a tasting of a delicious churro filled with your choice of flavor.
Next, we will venture to the lively Coyoacán Market, an ideal spot to observe local life as residents buy sugar skulls, seasonal crafts, and fresh flowers for their loved ones.
As dusk approaches, we will head toward the Xoco Cemetery, accompanied by chilling folk tales about the spirit realm. Upon reaching the cemetery, a brief overview of the etiquette expected at this sacred location will be provided.
You will then have around an hour of free time to wander the cemetery’s paths at your leisure. Take in the intricately decorated graves, engage in respectful conversations with families honoring their loved ones, and immerse yourself in one of Mexico's most profound cultural legacies.
At the conclusion of our visit, we will regroup at the cemetery entrance. Should you wish, you may opt to conclude your experience right there to continue your evening independently, or you can choose to accompany the guide back to downtown Coyoacán.
