Description
Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, a stunning Gothic structure located on a tidal island of the same name, stands as one of France's most famous landmarks. Dive into its captivating historical narrative!
Ticket Information
Pictures of a dramatic rock rising from the sea, adorned with fantastical Gothic edifices, likely come to mind... This captivating landscape is Mont-Saint-Michel, a tidal island sitting at the entrance of the Couesnon River along the Normandy coastline. Renowned as one of France's top tourist attractions, it has held sacred significance for over a millennium. Are you prepared to uncover its mysteries?
Your ticket enables you to roam the abbey freely. Marvel at the striking blend of Romanesque and Gothic design showcased throughout various sections of the structure, developed over time since the establishment of the original pre-Romanesque church-abbey in the 10th century.
Apart from the historic church, rediscovered only in the late 19th century, the abbey features another impressive complex known as the "Marveille", which housed the monks. Within this area, you’ll discover buildings erected under Abbot Robert de Torigni in the 12th century, along with the serene cloister and the refectory, the dining area for the monks.
Exploring deeper into the lower sections of Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey, you'll encounter the hidden crypts and the Saint Martin Chapel. Venture through this enchanting site and see if you can uncover hints of its diverse history dating back to the 15th century when it was not solely occupied by monks!
Depending on your visit, you might also get the chance to participate in one of the regular masses held for pilgrims within the church.
