Berchtesgaden & Eagle's Nest Day Trip
Description
Leave Munich behind for the day and head into the Bavarian Alps to visit a mountain-top house with a dark history entwined with the Third Reich. Discover its history on this day trip to Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest.
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet in the centre of Munich and from there, hop on a bus and head in the direction of Berchtesgaden: a bucolic mountain town nestled in a valley in the heart of the Bavarian Alps, close to the border between Germany and Austria.
Having arrived in the Alpine town and taken in the fresh mountain air, you'll make your way to Obersalzberg station, the departure point for visits to Kehlsteinhaus. This mountain chalet, known in English as the Eagle's Nest, was constructed under the Third Reich for exclusive use by Nazi Party members.
To reach the dizzying heights of the building, located on the peak of Kehlstein Mountain at over 6,000 ft (1,834 m), you'll use an elevator built into the rock (not included). Inside the building (entrance not included), you'll see different maps and other objects used by Hitler and the Nazis during the pivotal days of the Second World War. Outside the Eagle's Nest is a viewpoint offering privileged panoramic views over the dramatic mountains, sweeping valleys, and mysterious verdant forests of the Bavarian Alps extending at your feet.
Following your guided tour of Kehlsteinhaus, which will last around 2 hours, you'll return to the bottom of the mountain via the lift. From there, you'll be taken to Grafenhöhe, a restaurant in the foothills of the mountains, where you'll have an hour and fifteen minutes of free time to enjoy lunch (not included).
After lunch, we'll start our return journey to the meeting point in Munich, where we'll bring this tour to a close after between 10 and 10.5 hours in total.
