Herrenchiemsee Palace Day Trip
Description
Located on an island in Lake Chiemsee, Herrenchiemsee Palace stands as one of the most remarkable attractions in southern Bavaria. Join us on this excursion from Munich to delve into its captivating past!
Excursion Overview
Our journey begins at 4 Dachauer Straße, from where we will proceed with a brief stroll to Munich Central Station. We will then board a train for a scenic one-hour journey to the delightful town of Chiemsee.
Upon reaching our destination, a boat will take us to Herreninsel, the larger of the two main islands in the lake. In this idyllic setting, you may opt to explore the Herrenchiemsee Palace, an exquisite edifice inspired by the grandeur of Versailles. This palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, known for his eccentricity and for projects like the famous Neuschwanstein Castle.
For those who wish to enter, we will wander through the opulent chambers and meticulously maintained gardens of Herrenchiemsee, all while uncovering intriguing tales about Ludwig II, often referred to as the "Mad King." If you prefer to enjoy the outdoors, feel free to stroll the palace grounds at your leisure as the others take the tour inside.
Next, we will make our way to Fraueninsel, a neighboring island where a Benedictine convent boasts over a millennium of history. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the charming village that fills the island and bask in its serene environment.
After our time on Fraueninsel, we will reconvene and board the boat back to Chiemsee, before returning by train to Munich. Our memorable day concludes after approximately nine and a half hours.
