Tour Overview

Located in Rione Sanità, one of Naples' most densely populated areas, lies an extensive network of ancient burial sites beneath the city's surface. At the beginning of our tour, we will delve into the history behind the name “Sanità” (Health), which dates back to the 17th century, based on beliefs that the area, marked by the tombs of saints, offered healing properties.

We will explore one of the most remarkable underground assets of the city. As we descend into the expansive tunnels, you will be captivated by stunning frescoes and mosaics from the 5th and 6th centuries. Together, we will learn to recognize vital symbols of early Christianity illustrated on the walls, including the fish, lamb, and the vine along with its branches.

The 17th-Century Aristocratic Burials

Throughout the 17th century, this complex served as a burial ground for nobles and clergy, utilizing a remarkable method for interment. In the ambulatory corridor, skulls were prominently displayed, while the rest of each body was painted in elaborate frescoes depicting their clothing and professional tools, reflecting their social standing.

These exceptional frescoes were the work of Giovanni Balducci, who opted to forgo payment for his artistry in exchange for the honor of being laid to rest alongside the aristocrats in these very catacombs.

A Space Shaped by History

Throughout this experience, we will discuss how this intricate labyrinth has experienced multiple changes throughout the ages. After its abandonment, floods known as “lave dei vergini” (rivers of mud and debris) obstructed entry and altered many sections, particularly with the construction of the current Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità, leaving its original dimensions a subject of speculation.
