Catacombs of San Genaro Guided Tour
Description
Embark on a captivating guided exploration of the Catacombs of San Genaro, where art, history, and devotion converge across centuries. Enjoy an enriching experience!
Tour Overview
Welcome to the renowned Catacombs of San Genaro! Your adventure begins upon meeting at the Basilica dell'Incoronata Madre del Buon Consiglio, setting the stage for an intriguing journey.
Distinct from the often narrow Roman catacombs, the Catacombs of San Genaro will impress with their remarkable spaciousness, featuring two vast, non-overlapping levels hewn from solid volcanic tuff.
The Upper Level & Byzantine Glory (6th Century AD)
Our exploration starts at the uppermost tier, in the most majestic spiritual core of the site. We will delve into the impressive Basilica Adjecta, an underground edifice with three naves designed for pilgrims, and approach the tomb of Saint Genaro, the revered location that once sheltered the relics of the patron saint. Here, we will marvel at an extraordinary array of Byzantine-style frescoes, a remarkable example of early Christian artistry.
The Lower Vestibule (2nd Century A.D.)
Descending to the lower level, we will step back to the site’s pagan and early Christian heritage. Enter the grand lower vestibule, where ceilings reach an impressive 6 m (19.69 ft) high—a space that will leave you awestruck. Within this section, we will uncover the spacious 8th-century baptismal font commissioned by Bishop Paul II, who sought refuge here during the tumultuous iconoclastic era.
The Central Gallery
Next, the tour proceeds through the extensive central gallery of the catacombs. As you traverse this expansive underground corridor, you will gain a deeper appreciation for its vastness and the meticulously organized grid-like structure carved entirely from tuff.
The Basilica of Saint Agrippinus
We will finalize our poignant journey at the basilica honoring Saint Agrippinus, Naples' first historic patron saint. Here, we will observe a nave sculpted from the rock, the commanding episcopal chair made from tuff, and the celebrated altar, which remains largely intact, preserving the sacred entryway through which ancient followers would connect with the saint’s relics.
After approximately one hour, we will complete the tour by ascending back to the surface, marking the end of this insightful guided journey through the Catacombs of San Genaro.
