We'll gather at 718 N Rampart St at the designated time to commence our guided exploration of Treme, renowned as the African American neighborhood in New Orleans.
Our journey will begin with a visit to Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, offering insight into the soul of this historic area, which has been a beacon of freedom since the 18th century, even when liberation was only a distant aspiration for many African Americans. During the tour, you will uncover the reasons behind this historical significance along with numerous intriguing anecdotes.
Throughout our walk, we will stop at significant landmarks such as St. Augustine's Church, recognized as the first black Catholic church in the nation. We will discuss the impact of the Civil War on this vibrant community and delve into the troubling history of the Ku Klux Klan and its effects on the neighborhood.
Meandering through the picturesque streets adorned with distinctive architectural styles, we will come across remarkable Creole houses. Our tour will also shed light on the history of jazz. Did you know that the roots of this groundbreaking genre trace back to the Treme area?
