Gospel Mass + Harlem Tour
Description
Embark on this Harlem escapade to uncover the landmarks, vibrant history, and cultural significance of one of New York’s most dynamic districts. During the experience, you’ll also witness a live gospel service.
Tour Options
On booking the Harlem excursion featuring gospel service, you can select from two different approaches: a vehicle tour or a walking tour. Both options span around 4 hours and commence in a centralized location in Manhattan. The vehicle tour utilizes a minibus or bus for transport to Harlem, while the walking option will see you utilizing the subway.
Below is what each format entails:
Vehicle Tour
We will convene at the Starbucks situated at 325 W 49th St, from where we will travel by bus to Harlem, an area renowned for its uniqueness in the northern reaches of Manhattan. Upon arrival, we will initiate a panoramic exploration to uncover the key sites within the community.
Our first stop will be the exterior of the Cotton Club, the iconic venue that inspired its namesake film and played a pivotal role in the rise of jazz. Next, we will visit the Casa de la Señora Clara McBride Hale, commonly referred to as Mother Hale, who established a home for disadvantaged children at the Hale House Center.
Following that, we will proceed to the General Grant Memorial, the final resting place of Ulysses S. Grant, esteemed war leader and 18th president of the United States, along with his spouse, Julia Grant.
After our panoramic exploration, we will partake in the highlight of our day: a gospel mass, with the duration varying based on the day and the church’s visitor count.
Concluding the 4-hour journey, we will wrap up our activity at 59th Street, located in Meatpacking District.
Walking Tour
If you opt for the walking tour, our meeting point will be at 329 W 49th Street, after which we will head by subway to Harlem.
Upon arrival in this culturally rich neighborhood, we will commence our guided walking adventure. This segment features an exploration of some of the most celebrated murals of Harlem, including I Love Harlem, Spirit of Harlem, Lebron Malcolm X, Planet Harlem, and Education is not a Crime.
The emphasis of this tour lies in Harlem’s street art and cultural essence, showcasing acclaimed murals that illustrate the neighborhood’s historical and social narratives. Key landmarks such as the Apollo Theater and the historic Hotel Theresa will also be part of our journey.
A brief pause will be included, allowing for refreshments, as we conclude our walking tour within a local church where you’ll experience the profound sounds of a live gospel mass.
The 4-hour itinerary wraps up adjacent to Sylvia's, a renowned restaurant near a church situated on Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem.
