What was the experience of gold mining in Brazil during the colonial era? To delve into this, we will gather at the entrance of the Grande Mina Central. Before we navigate the mine's passages, an introductory session will shed light on the historical backdrop of the gold rush, a pivotal chapter that shaped Ouro Preto's development and its significance in Brazil’s historical economy.

Our journey will start with an exploration of gold mining in Minas Gerais. Ouro Preto emerged as a principal mining hub during the time of Portuguese colonization. This influx of wealth led to the city’s evolution into a monumental urban center, characterized by splendid Baroque churches, grand residences, and a vibrant marketplace connected to gold.

We will then embark on our descent into the mine, where we have access to over 600 meters of public tunnels. As we wander through these underground chambers, still showcasing traditional mining techniques, we’ll admire the natural rock formations and the strategic lighting set to reveal the textures of the walls, visible mineral veins, and the irregularities of the underground landscape.

During a 30- to 40-minute guided tour, we will navigate through this subterranean maze, discussing the methods employed for gold extraction in the 18th century, the tools that miners utilized, and what a typical day for the workers entailed. Many endeavors within Ouro Preto’s mines were carried out manually, utilizing basic tools and enduring harsh working conditions. Furthermore, we’ll observe rock formations and traces of gold veins, enriching our understanding of the area's mineralogical profile.

Upon exiting the mine, visitors will have the opportunity to capture photographs of the surrounding area and visit the gift shop.
