Deer Canyon Hiking Tour
Description
Embark on an exploration of the hidden gems of Antelope Canyon with our hiking expedition through Deer Canyon, where you will descend approximately 40 meters (131 feet) between striking rock layers and illuminating beams of light. The scenery is set to leave you in awe!
Hiking Expedition in Deer Canyon
We will convene at the scheduled time at Milepost 35.5, where an introductory briefing on the hiking trail awaits. Prepare your hiking boots for the adventure ahead!
As we set out, our journey will take us in search of the entrance to Deer Canyon, regarded as one of the more obscure slot canyons in the Antelope Valley. The highlight of our trek will be the descent down a 41-meter (134-foot) staircase, which gradually guides us into the heart of towering sandstone walls.
Upon entering, we will navigate through a narrow passage carved into the Navajo sandstone. This particular sandstone, originating from ancient dunes, showcases its wavy forms not just for aesthetics but as a testament to historical hydrodynamic processes. Witnessing how sediment movement has sculpted these corridors over centuries will provide excellent photographic opportunities!
Our hike will reveal how light filters through at angles, creating dramatic shadows and shifting colors with each step we take. We’ll maintain a steady pace to accommodate the varied terrain, which includes loose sandy stretches and firmer ground.
Additionally, we will examine erosion patterns present on smooth rock surfaces, alongside small hollows shaped by sediment during sudden flash flooding events.
As we conclude our journey, we’ll emerge from the canyon with a deeper understanding of the prominent geological features that contribute to the distinctive shape of Deer Canyon.
