Palermo Anti-Mafia Tour
Description
Embark on a journey to explore the most significant sites associated with the struggle against mafia influence and the fight against extortion through this Anti-Mafia Tour in Palermo.
Tour Overview
We will convene at the designated location in front of the Teatro Massimo, located at Piazza Guiseppe Verdi, where we will begin our exploration focused on civil resistance against organized crime.
After appreciating the exterior of the Teatro Massimo, we will proceed to Piazza Beati Paoli, named after a secret sect referenced by Luigi Natoli in his literary work. Here, we will delve into the supposed connection between the sect and Cosa Nostra before making our way to Mercato del Capo, believed to conceal paths utilized by the Beati Paoli.
Our itinerary will then take us to Piazza della Memoria, where a memorial dedicated to magistrates murdered by the Mafia stands. Following this, we will visit the Palermo Cathedral, discussing the complex ties between the Mafia and the Church. Are you familiar with the story of Don Pino Puglisi?
As we pass the Town Hall, which once epitomized the alliance between Cosa Nostra and political authority, we will head towards Piazza Magione in the historic Kalsa district, where both Falcone and Borsellino grew up.
During our tour, we will encounter the insignia of the "Pago chi non paga" (I pay those who don’t pay) campaign, displayed in shop windows that have resisted extortion thanks to the Addiopizzo Committee, which has empowered citizens to stand against protection rackets in the city.
Our tour will conclude after approximately 3 hours at the Fontana Pretoria.
