Palermo Catacombs Tour
Description
Embark on a journey through the catacombs of Palermo, where you'll encounter the preserved remains of numerous mummies and delve into the captivating history beneath the Sicilian capital. Discover the stories interwoven within this unique location.
Overview of the Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo
The catacombs in Palermo are an extensive network of interlinked passages hewn from volcanic rock, encompassing an approximate area of 300 square meters (3230 square feet). Within these burial sites lie around 2,000 skeletons and mummified remains, which, as legend suggests, includes the infamous Count of Cagliostro.
Mummified individuals are organized in various galleries based on their gender, social standing, and profession. The most ancient corridor is home to the Capuchin Friars, elegantly attired in the traditional robes of their order. Additionally, a special room is dedicated to priests, who are adorned in ceremonial vestments.
Notable sections include the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix, housing the remains of young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the familial corridor.
Itinerary of the Tour
At the designated hour, we'll convene at Piazza Cappuccini to kick off our exploration of Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs. Are you ready to uncover one of Sicily's most exceptional sites?
Upon entering, we'll meander through the various segments of the catacombs, including the Capuchin Friars' section, the tomb of young Rosalia Lombardo, famously dubbed "sleeping beauty" due to her remarkably life-like appearance, and the corridor featuring noteworthy personalities like sculptors Filippo Pennino and Lorenzo Marabitti.
As we conclude our insight into the catacombs, we will transition to the Sant'Orsola Cemetery, a historic place of burial for many illustrious figures of Palermo, including Ninni Cassarà, Libero Grassi, Mario Rutelli, and Luigi Natoli. A host of fascinating individuals!
Our next destination will be the Palermo Cathedral Catacombs, where even more historical characters rest. We will part ways here after approximately two hours of exploration.
