Palermo Catacombs Tour
Description
During this excursion into the catacombs of Palermo, participants will encounter the remains of numerous mummies and unveil the mysteries lying beneath Sicily's capital. Discover the intriguing past of this unique location!
Overview of the Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo
The Capuchin Catacombs in Palermo consist of interconnected chambers hewn from volcanic rock, spanning roughly 300 square meters (approximately 3,230 square feet). These burial sites are home to around 2,000 skeletons and mummified remains, including what some believe to be the remains of the Count of Cagliostro.
Within the catacombs, mummies are displayed in various galleries based on gender, social class, and profession. The oldest section is dedicated to the Capuchin Friars, who are preserved in the traditional attire of their order. Additionally, a room is reserved for priests, showcased in their elaborate ceremonial garments.
Other notable sections comprise the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix, which holds the remains of young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the family corridor.
