Matera Trip

We will start our day with a pick-up from your hotel in Palinuro, after which we will travel by bus to Matera. Prepare to discover one of the most intriguing locations in Italy!

Upon arrival, the journey begins with a tour through the heart of Matera, one of the oldest cities globally, renowned for its iconic cave dwellings known as the Sassi. These unique structures were recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1993.

Throughout the tour, we will explore the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, two remarkable neighborhoods. Our knowledgeable guide will share insights into their rich history, illustrating the evolution of life for Matera's residents from the challenges faced in the 1950s to the city's current status and its honor as the European Capital of Culture in 2019.

As we stroll through the city center, we will admire some of the most significant Baroque churches, including the Matera Cathedral, the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, and the Church of Santa Chiara. Each one a true masterpiece!

Following a brief pause for lunch, those interested can take the opportunity to explore some of the notable rock churches in Matera, such as the Church of Santa Maria di Idris, the Church of San Pietro Barisano, and the Church of Santa Lucia alle Malve.

At the conclusion of our adventure, we will board the bus for our return trip to Palinuro.
