Palma Cathedral & Museum of Sacred Art Tickets
Description
If you haven't yet explored the renowned "Cathedral of Light," this entry grants you the opportunity to access Palma Cathedral, an iconic symbol of Mallorca's capital city. The ticket also provides entry to the Museum of Sacred Art!
Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma
Commonly referred to as La Seu, or the "Cathedral of Light," this cathedral stands as a prominent feature of the Mallorcan skyline. This ticket allows you to wander through this remarkable example of Levantine Gothic architecture, built over several centuries, from the 13th to the 17th century, atop the remnants of a former mosque.
Here are some of the key attractions within the Palma Cathedral that you shouldn't miss:
Rose Window
The cathedral is home to the largest Gothic rose window globally, measuring approximately 42 ft (13 m) in diameter and covering about 1076 ft² (100 m²). Its intricate stained-glass design comprises 1236 vibrant crystals, creating a spectacle of light throughout the nave.
Each year, on February 2 and November 11, a unique phenomenon known as vuit de la Seu occurs, when the morning sun illuminates the rose window perfectly to cast a radiant "8" of light.
Gaudí's Central Nave Restoration
From 1904 to 1914, the notable architect Antoni Gaudí oversaw significant renovations within the cathedral. He removed the obstructive choir from the central nave, enlarged window openings to enhance natural lighting, and designed an impressive baldachin for the main altar.
Capilla del Santísimo
This chapel features a unique transformation by the Mallorcan artist Miquel Barceló, who created an enormous ceramic mural in 2005, reflecting themes of the miracle of the bread and fish alongside inspirations from the Mediterranean sea life.
Panteón Real
This royal mausoleum is the final resting place of King James II and King James III, essential figures in the historical narrative of the Kingdom of Mallorca.
Museo Catedralicio
Situated in the chapter houses and cloister area, the Museo Catedralicio presents an extensive collection of sacred artworks, featuring gold and silver monstrances, medieval reliefs, and paintings reflecting the religious heritage of the island.
Museu d'Art Sacre de Mallorca
It is important to note that the Museo Catedralicio should not be confused with the Museum of Sacred Art of Mallorca (Museu d'Art Sacre de Mallorca or MASM), which is located at the Palacio Episcopal de Palma, behind the cathedral. This museum can also be accessed with your ticket.
The MASM boasts over 1200 artworks reflecting the progression of art and spirituality in Mallorca, spanning from the 13th to the 20th century. Among its notable pieces are:
- Retablo de San Jorge: A masterpiece of Mallorcan Gothic painting
- Crocrodrile of Palma: A dissected crocodile associated with a 17th-century legend of terrorizing Palma children at night
- Flemish tapestries: A stunning collection of 12 tapestries from the 16th century, illustrating various biblical narratives
- Flemish paintings: Significant Renaissance panel artworks from the Valencian school, including The Baptism of Jesus, attributed to Juan de Juanes' workshop.
