Details of the Activity
Day 1: From Petrópolis to Castelos do Açu
Prepare yourself for one of Brazil's most renowned hiking trails as you join the Petrô-Tere Crossing, a three-day adventure stretching from Petrópolis to Teresópolis.
We will gather at the Petrópolis Leonel Brizola bus terminal at the designated time. Once all participants are present, we’ll hand our luggage over to the shared porters and set off on our hike. Be ready; the first day demands physical endurance!
This section of the trail will take us up over 1100 meters (3609 ft) above sea level, winding through the lush Atlantic Forest and leading us to Pedra do Queijo within Serra dos Órgãos National Park. We’ll pause here to catch our breath and absorb the spectacular scenery. Our journey continues to Ajax, where we will take another short break.
Once recharged, we'll navigate the challenging path through Isabeloca, an historic climb that guides us to Chapadão and eventually to the pinnacle of Castelos do Açu. Here, our campsite will welcome us for our first night under the stars.
The day's trek will span between 6 and 8 hours, contingent upon the group's pace, but the breathtaking vistas of Rio de Janeiro, Guanabara Bay, and the surrounding mountains will reward your efforts. To cap off the day, a delightful dinner will be served, prepared by our skilled guides.
Day 2: From Castelos do Açu to Pedra do Sino
After enjoying breakfast at dawn in camp, we’ll embark on the second day’s adventure towards Pedra do Sino. This is undoubtedly the highlight of our expedition!
We’ll start our hike at an elevation of 2000 meters (6562 ft), relishing the stunning vistas along the way. Our trek takes us through the valley, past Morro do Marco and Morro da Luva, leading to the Elevador, which will ascend us to the summit of Morro do Dinossauro. From this vantage point, we can admire Pedra do Garrafão and Pedra do Sino, two natural wonders sure to leave an impression.
We will proceed through Vale das Antas and Morro da Baleia. The most technical challenge of the day awaits at Cavalinho, which will test our balance, but rest assured, our guides will assist in navigating this section, equipped with safety gear for the more demanding areas.
Following this ascent, we’ll continue to Refuge 4 at Pedra do Sino. After hiking for a total of between 8 and 12 hours, we’ll conclude the day by soaking in the mountainous backdrop while enjoying dinner at camp.
Day 3: From Pedra do Sino to Teresópolis
After breakfast, we will take in the sunrise views from Pedra do Sino. Ready for the final day, we’ll start our descent toward the Teresópolis reservoir.
As we make our way down, you'll encounter picturesque waterfalls, including the stunning 16-meter (52 ft) Veil of the Bride waterfall. This portion promises to be a delightful end to our challenging adventure, providing a more relaxed experience to wrap up our journey.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, we will arrive in Teresópolis by late afternoon, specifically at the entrance of Serra dos Órgãos National Park, marking the conclusion of our three-day journey.
