Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Pitalito - San Agustín
Our journey commences with a pick-up from your hotel in Pitalito at the scheduled time, as we set off on this thrilling 2-day excursion to San Agustín. This region boasts some of Colombia's most significant archaeological sites. Let’s begin!
After a scenic drive of about 45 minutes, we will arrive at Salto del Mortiño, a breathtaking waterfall with a height exceeding 200 meters (656 feet). Here, a walking trail will lead us to an observation point offering stunning views.
From this elevated position, capture memorable photos before visiting a glass viewpoint that permits a thrilling overhead view of the waterfall. Prepare for an exhilarating experience!
Subsequently, we will explore the Alto de las Piedras and Alto de los Ídolos Archaeological Park, recognized as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995. This adventure will take you back in time, allowing you to immerse yourself in the cultural heritage of the megalithic realm of pre-Columbian societies.
The distinctiveness of this site lies in the remarkable human and animal figurines, especially noted for their size and the intricate paintings adorning the statues as well as the walls of tombs and small temples.
After completing our tour, we will break to indulge in a delicious traditional Colombian lunch. Following this refreshing pause, we’ll journey to the Obando Community Archaeological Museum, which displays artifacts from two Indigenous cultures that thrived in different eras.
Our first day wraps up with a visit to the stunning Magdalena River Strait, where the river narrows to form a channel just 1.70 meters (5.6 feet) wide, framed by impressive rocks. The scenic beauty of this landscape is sure to leave you in awe!
Finally, we will check you in at the hotel in San Agustín for the night, where you can enjoy dinner and a restful night.
Day 2: San Agustín - Pitalito
The following morning begins with a hearty breakfast before checking out of the accommodation to embark on the second day of this fascinating trip.
Our morning will be devoted to delving into the captivating history of the San Agustín Archaeological Park, home to Colombia's largest collection of stone religious monuments and statues.
Spread across 78 hectares, these statues commemorate the funeral practices of ancient inhabitants from the Huila region, who held beliefs in an afterlife and worshiped various deities represented by animals and elements of nature.
By noon, our exploration of this archaeological wonder will conclude, and we will commence our journey back to the original meeting point in Pitalito, expecting to arrive around 1 pm.
